Club Competitions
Mens's Championship (L.A Gower): this is the main open singles competition for men. Any male club member can enter. Matches are played with four bowls each and the winner is the first to reach 21 Shots.
Please note for this particular competition you can only represent one club.
Ladies' Championship (Pendley Cup): this is the equivalent competition for ladies, rules as for the men’s singles above.
Please note for this particular competition you can only represent one club.
C.E. Kew Cup (Men's) and Rodwell Cup (Ladies') Handicap(separate men’s and ladies’ competitions – same rules): again any member can enter this for the relevant gender. It is played with four bowls each. All players are given a handicap by the club selection committee to reflect their experience, and the winner is the first to reach their handicap – eg if a player with an 18 handicap plays someone with a handicap of 24, the winner will be the first of these two if s/he can reach 18 before their opponent reaches 24, and vice versa. This allows for players of very varying abilities to have a close game and is ideal for new members.
Sharman Freeman (Men’s/Ladies Novice): Following the 2017 AGM this is now an Open Competition, open to both men and women members who have not previously won any singles competition within the club. It is played with four bowls and the winner is the first to reach 21 shots. Again it is ideal for newer members. Also at the 2017 AGM it was agreed that this competition will be played on a league basis with a closing date for each round spread over the season, so as to provide more matches. More detailed rules will be provided at a later date. Please note previous winners of this competition, club championship, club handicap, club centenary cannot enter.
Tom Rolfe: this is a singles competition open to men and women who will be 65 or over on 1/4/21. It is played with four woods and the winner is the first to reach 21.
VP Cub (Men's) and Cox Cup (Ladies’) pairs: The single sex pairings for these competitions will be drawn at the club draw evening. Players are ‘seeded’ to create pairings with one more experienced player playing skip, and one less experienced player playing lead. It is played with four bowls each and the winner is the pair leading after 21 ends. It is a good opportunity for newer members to play with more experienced team mates and develop their game.
Ladies’ 2 Wood: This is a competition just for ladies, played with two woods each and the winner is the person ahead after 21 ends.
Centenary (fixed jack): this is a singles competition open to both men and ladies. The match is played to alternate long and short jacks, one end each, fixed at the shortest and longest legal jack length. It is played with four bowls each and is scored with four points for the nearest bowl to the jack, three for the second nearest, two for the third and one for the fourth, whether these are by the same or different players. The winner is first to reach 90 points.
Reg Gray Open Pairs: this is open to men and ladies (so pairs may be either single sex or mixed) and is drawn, as with the men’s and ladies’ pairs above, to create balanced pairings. It is played with four bowls for each player and the winners are those ahead after 21 ends.
Late season open two wood singles competition: this is open to all, and starts late in the season. Those interested can sign up now or in July. Rules as for the ladies two woods. The semi-final and the final will be held late mid to late September. Members are encouraged to come down to support players, for this and all competitions.
